How Is It Calculated

The calculator follows 6 steps.

  1. Find the Atmakaraka, the planet with the highest degree within its sign among the 7 planets from the Sun to Saturn.
  2. Find the sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the navamsa (D9). This sign is the Karakamsha.
  3. Count to the 12th sign from the Karakamsha in the navamsa.
  4. If a planet occupies that sign, it decides the deity. With several planets there, the one with the highest degree within its sign decides.
  5. If the sign is empty, the lord of that sign decides.
  6. The deity of the deciding planet is your Ishta Devata.

The 12th house governs moksha. The 12th from the Karakamsha shows the form of the divine that leads the soul toward it. The rule comes from the Jaimini Upadesha Sutras.

Understanding Your Result

The result names the deciding planet and its deity. The text under the result card describes that deity and a simple way to begin worship. Secondary planets in the same sign show other forms of the divine that also support you.

When the 12th from the Karakamsha is empty, the sign lord decides. That result is just as valid, and the lord's own navamsa placement adds detail to it.

Each planet links to more than one deity in the tradition, and the full table is in the FAQ below. Choose the form that draws your mind most naturally. Regular worship of the Ishta Devata steadies and purifies the mind.

Your Ishta Devata may be the same as your family deity (Kuladevata) or a different one. Both can be honoured together.

Shiva and Rama come through the Sun. Shiva is the lord of meditation and renunciation, and Rama is the avatar of Vishnu who lived by dharma. Begin with Om Namah Shivaya or the name of Rama, chanted at sunrise.

Through the Moon, the Ishta Devata is Parvati (Gauri) or Krishna, and the path to both is devotion of the heart. For Parvati, chant Om Gauryai Namah. For Krishna, chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

Mars gives Hanuman or Kartikeya (Skanda), the warrior forms of devotion. Both stand for courage, service and discipline. Read the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, or chant Om Sharavanabhavaya Namah for Kartikeya.

Vishnu is the Ishta Devata when Mercury decides. As the preserver of the world, he brings clarity and balance to the mind of the devotee. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, or chant Om Namo Narayanaya daily.

Jupiter points to Vishnu or Dattatreya. Dattatreya is the guru who holds Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in a single form, which suits Jupiter as the planet of the guru. His mantra is Om Dram Dattatreyaya Namah, and Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya serves for Vishnu.

Venus gives Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, beauty and grace. Her worship brings order and contentment to home and work. Friday is her day, and her mantra is Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.

With Saturn deciding, the Ishta Devata is Shiva or Narayana. Saturn relates to patience, service and detachment, and worship of either form supports that inner work. Chant Om Namah Shivaya or Om Namo Narayanaya, and add regular service to people in need.

Rahu points to Durga, the mother who removes fear and confusion. Her worship steadies a restless mind. Read the Durga Saptashati during Navaratri, or chant Om Dum Durgayai Namah through the year.

Ketu gives Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings. His worship brings focus to spiritual practice. Chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namah before starting any new work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ishta Devata?

The Ishta Devata is the chosen form of the divine for a person, the deity whose worship leads toward moksha. In Jaimini astrology it is read from the 12th sign from the Karakamsha. Its worship is a daily practice that steadies and purifies the mind.

How is the Ishta Devata found?

Start from the Atmakaraka. Its sign in the navamsa is the Karakamsha. The 12th sign from the Karakamsha in the navamsa names the deity through the planet that sits there. When that sign is empty, its lord decides.

What if several planets sit in the 12th from the Karakamsha?

The one with the highest degree within its sign decides, and the others are shown as secondary.

Which deity goes with which planet?

Sun: Shiva or Rama. Moon: Parvati or Krishna. Mars: Hanuman or Kartikeya. Mercury: Vishnu. Jupiter: Vishnu or Dattatreya. Venus: Lakshmi. Saturn: Shiva or Narayana. Rahu: Durga. Ketu: Ganesha.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. The Karakamsha is a navamsa sign, and a navamsa is 3°20' wide, so the Atmakaraka can cross into the next one within hours.
