How Your Ascendant Is Calculated
The ascendant is a point on the ecliptic, not a fixed clock reading. It depends on three inputs: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and the latitude and longitude of your birthplace. Change any one input and the rising degree shifts.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. The rising degree is measured against the fixed stars, which requires the ayanamsha correction to account for precession. Vedicmarga uses the Lahiri ayanamsha, where the current correction sits near 24 degrees.
A chart cast without the ayanamsha correction places your ascendant almost a full sign ahead. Every house in the chart is then wrong.
Birth time accuracy carries the same weight. The ascendant changes roughly every two hours, faster or slower depending on your latitude and the sign rising. A birth time rounded to the nearest half hour can push the ascendant into the neighbouring sign. Ascendant, Moon Sign, and Sun Sign
Three points in a chart get called a person's sign, and each answers a different question.
Your ascendant, or lagna, is the sign rising at birth. It carries the body, the constitution, vitality, temperament, and the direction a life takes. Your Moon sign, called simply your rashi, is the sign holding the Moon. It carries mind, emotional texture, memory, and receptivity. Why Your Ascendant Decides Which Planets Help You
Every planet carries a benefic or malefic quality of its own. Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, and unafflicted Mercury are natural benefics. The Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu are natural malefics. This natural classification holds in every chart.
Functional nature is a separate matter and it changes with the ascendant. Four rules from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra decide it:
- Rulers of the trine houses, the 1st, 5th, and 9th (trikona), act as benefics.
- Rulers of the 6th, 8th, and 12th (dusthana) act as malefics, along with the rulers of the 3rd and the 11th.

A yogakaraka appears where one planet rules an angular house and a trine house at the same time. Six rising signs produce one: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.
