The Bhava Chalit chart places the planets by house cusp. The lagna degree is the middle of the 1st house and the MC the middle of the 10th. Every house has a start and an end, and this calculator draws them by the Sripati method. It lists the cusp and the edges of each house and shows which planets sit in a different house than in the rashi chart.

Get Started NowThe Sripati method uses the lagna and the MC as 2 fixed points, so the houses are unequal and follow the latitude of birth. A planet moves house here when its degree falls outside the arc that its sign's house covers. Read the moved planet for the matters of its Chalit house, and keep its sign and lordship from the rashi chart.
The equal method takes the lagna degree as the middle of the 1st house and makes every house 30° wide from there. It ignores the MC, so the houses are the same width at every latitude. A planet moves house here when it stands more than 15° from the middle of its sign's house.
How Is It Calculated
The lagna degree is the middle of the 1st house, and the MC is the middle of the 10th. The 7th middle lies opposite the lagna and the 4th middle opposite the MC. The 4 quadrants between these points are each cut into 3 equal parts, which gives the middles of the other 8 houses.
Each house edge, the bhava sandhi, lies halfway between 2 middles. A planet belongs to the house whose edges hold its degree. The calculator compares that house with the whole-sign house of the rashi chart and reports every planet that differs.
A planet within 1° of a sandhi is tagged. At that distance a birth time off by 4 minutes moves it across the edge.
Understanding Your Result
A planet that changes house gives the results of the Chalit house through the sign and lordship of the rashi chart. Mars in Leo in the 5th house of the rashi chart, moved to the 4th by cusp, keeps Leo, its lord and its dignity. What changes is the area of life where its work is felt: the home and the mother, the matters of the 4th.
The rashi chart stays the base for sign, lordship, aspects and yogas. The Chalit chart refines the house. When the 2 agree, read with confidence. When they disagree, expect both areas to show, with the Chalit house stronger in the day-to-day results.
A planet at a house edge is weak for that house's matters and gives mixed results between the 2 houses. Confirm the birth time before reading such a placement. The rule for weighing a house from the lagna, the Moon and the Sun is set out in How to Judge a House.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Bhava Chalit chart?
A chart in which each house is an arc between 2 cusps. The lagna degree is the middle of the 1st house and the MC the middle of the 10th, with the edges halfway between middles. A planet near the edge of a sign can fall into a different house than in the rashi chart.
How are the house cusps calculated?
By the Sripati method. The lagna degree is the middle of the 1st house and the MC the middle of the 10th. The 7th and 4th middles lie opposite. Each quadrant is cut into three equal parts for the houses between, and each house edge is halfway between two middles.
Why does a planet change house?
A house in the rashi chart is a whole sign. In the Chalit chart it is an arc between two edges, which rarely line up with the sign boundaries. A planet near the start or end of a sign can fall into the neighbouring house.
What does a planet at a house edge mean?
A planet within a degree of a bhava sandhi is weak for that house's matters. A small error in the birth time moves it to the other side. The calculator tags it.
Which chart should I read?
Both, in order. The rashi chart gives the sign, the lordship, the aspects and the yogas, and it stays the base of every reading. The Chalit chart refines the house a planet works through. When the 2 disagree, read both areas of life, with the Chalit house stronger in day-to-day results.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes. The lagna and the MC move a degree every four minutes, so every cusp depends on the minute.
