How Is Ashtakavarga Calculated?

The name comes from ashta, meaning 8. Each planet receives bindus from 8 reference points: the 7 planets from the Sun to Saturn and the Lagna of the birth chart. Rahu and Ketu are left out of the standard method.

The classical rules fix which signs get a bindu from each reference point. The result for one planet is its Bhinnashtakavarga, a score from 0 to 8 for each of the 12 signs.

Adding the 7 Bhinnashtakavarga tables gives the Sarvashtakavarga. Its total is always 337 bindus, so the average for a sign is about 28.

Your result shows:

• Bhinnashtakavarga tables: the bindus each planet gives to every sign
• Sarvashtakavarga: the combined score for every sign
• Bindus by house: the scores counted from your Lagna
• Highest and lowest signs: the strongest and weakest parts of your chart

How to Read Your Ashtakavarga Chart

• Sarvashtakavarga by house: a house with 28 bindus or more is supported. A house with 30 or more is strong, and one under 25 needs more effort for results. The upachaya houses (3, 6, 10 and 11) tend to improve with time.
• Planet by planet: look at the sign each planet occupies at birth in its own Bhinnashtakavarga. 5 or more bindus there give the planet more power to deliver its results.
• Transits: check the bindus a planet has in its own Bhinnashtakavarga for the sign it crosses. 4 or more bindus support the transit, and 3 or fewer weaken it.
• Income and expenses: a traditional rule says more bindus in the 11th house than in the 12th show income greater than expenses.

A Worked Example

Say your 10th house holds 34 bindus in the Sarvashtakavarga, well above the average of 28. The house of career has strong support in your chart.
