Kaal Sarp Dosh Calculator: Type, Partial Cases and What Reduces It

Kaal Sarp Dosh names a chart in which the 7 planets from the Sun to Saturn stand on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. This calculator reads your chart by degree. It tells you whether the pattern is there, whether it is partial, and which of the 12 types Rahu's house makes. It then lists the factors that reduce its effect and shows how many of them your chart holds.

Kaal Sarp Dosh is a later tradition, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra does not describe it. The classical texts read Rahu and Ketu by house, sign, dispositor and the planets with them. Take this result as one observation about the chart. The strength of the lagna lord, the Moon and the running dasha say far more about how life unfolds than the axis alone.

Anant Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 1st house and Ketu in the 7th. The pull is toward the self, its image and its independence, and partnerships ask for patience. Read the lagna lord and the 7th lord next. When they are strong, this axis gives a determined person who learns to work with others.

Kulik Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 2nd house and Ketu in the 8th. Speech, savings and family matters carry the tension, and money tends to come and go in phases. A strong 2nd lord and Jupiter's aspect steady it. Watch what you say in anger and keep a written account of what you earn.

Vasuki Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 9th. Rahu in an upachaya house is one of the reducing factors, so this type is counted mild. Effort, courage and siblings sit on one end, and belief and the teacher on the other. Study with a living guide, and let the guide set the pace.

Shankhpal Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 4th house and Ketu in the 10th. Home, the mother, property and peace of mind share the axis with work and public duty. The chart often shows a career far from the birthplace. Read the 4th lord and the Moon before judging how much this shows.

Padma Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 5th house and Ketu in the 11th. Children, study, speculation and the mind's focus are the themes. Gains come in bursts. A strong 5th lord and Jupiter in a kendra lift this placement, and steady mantra practice suits a mind that Rahu keeps restless.

Mahapadma Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 6th house and Ketu in the 12th. Rahu in the 6th is an upachaya placement and one of the reducing factors, so this type is read as mild. Rahu here gives fight against competitors, debt and illness. Ketu in the 12th turns the mind toward solitude and release.

Takshak Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 7th house and Ketu in the 1st. Partnership, marriage and business dealings carry the weight. The person tends to draw partners unlike themselves and learns through them. Read the 7th lord, Venus and the navamsa before drawing any conclusion about marriage.

Karkotak Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 8th house and Ketu in the 2nd. Sudden change, inheritance, research and hidden matters are the themes, and the family's money is affected. This type asks for care with the birth time, as the 8th and the 2nd are read together. A strong 8th lord and Jupiter's aspect ease it.

Shankhachud Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 9th house and Ketu in the 3rd. Fortune, the father, the teacher and long journeys sit with Rahu. Beliefs are questioned and rebuilt, often after a period abroad. The 9th lord's strength decides the outcome, and daana and service to one's teacher are the classical answer to Rahu here.

Ghatak Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 10th house and Ketu in the 4th. Rahu in the 10th is an upachaya placement and one of the reducing factors. Career ambition runs high and the home life pays for it. The 10th lord and Saturn show whether the ambition settles into lasting work.

Vishdhar Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 11th house and Ketu in the 5th. Rahu in the 11th is an upachaya placement and one of the reducing factors, so this type is counted mild. Gains and friendships grow through unconventional means. Children and study take longer to settle, so read the 5th lord with care.

Sheshnag Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 12th house and Ketu in the 6th. Expenses, foreign lands, sleep and the mind's hidden fears are the themes. Ketu in the 6th gives a quiet strength against enemies and illness. Travel or settlement abroad often turns this placement to advantage.

How Is It Calculated

The calculator takes the arc from Rahu forward through the zodiac to Ketu, and the arc from Ketu forward to Rahu. It then checks the degree of each of the 7 planets. A planet in the same sign as a node is placed by degree, so it can stand on either side.

When all 7 planets fall in the arc from Rahu to Ketu, the chart has Kaal Sarp Dosh. When 6 fall inside and 1 falls outside, the calculator reports partial (Anshik) Kaal Sarp and names the planet that breaks the arc. When all 7 fall in the arc from Ketu to Rahu, the calculator reports Kaal Amrit and labels it on its own.

The type comes from Rahu's house counted from the lagna. Rahu in the 1st gives Anant, in the 2nd Kulik, and so on to Sheshnag in the 12th. The rules that decide each step, and the 6 reducing factors, are listed with their source under the result.

Understanding Your Result

The pattern is read as a tendency. Rahu and Ketu hold every other planet between them, so the person feels driven along one line of life and blocked on another. The house of Rahu shows where the drive is felt.

The reducing factors change the reading a great deal. A planet in the same sign as a node, or Jupiter's aspect on a node, takes away part of the effect. So does Rahu in an upachaya house, a benefic in a kendra, or a lagna outside the occupied arc. A chart with 3 or more of them carries little of the dosha.

Read the chart before the dosha. A strong lagna lord, a well placed Moon and a benefic's dasha give the person the means to work with this axis. Rahu shows what the mind chases, and Ketu shows what it has already learnt. Study of Rahu and Ketu in your chart is the practical next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kaal Sarp Dosh?

A chart in which the 7 planets from the Sun to Saturn all stand on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. The tradition reads it as a life driven along one line and blocked on another, with Rahu's house showing where the drive is felt. The rest of the chart decides how much of this shows.

How is Kaal Sarp Dosh calculated?

By degree. The arc from Rahu forward to Ketu is taken. When the 7 planets from the Sun to Saturn all fall inside it, the chart has the dosha. A planet in the same sign as a node, past its degree, stands on the other side.

What is partial Kaal Sarp?

Six of the seven planets inside one arc and one outside it. The calculator names the planet that breaks the arc.

What is Kaal Amrit?

All seven planets in the other arc, from Ketu forward to Rahu. Some readers count it as Kaal Sarp and some read it apart; the calculator labels it on its own.

Is Kaal Sarp Dosh in the classical texts?

No, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra does not describe it, and neither do Phaladeepika or Saravali. The name and the 12 types come from later practice. The classical texts read Rahu and Ketu by house, sign, dispositor and the planets with them. That reading carries more weight than the axis alone.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. The lagna decides the type, and a planet near a node's degree can change side within hours.
