Rahu is the north node of the Moon, the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path going north. It has no physical body, so Vedic astrology calls it a chaya graha, a shadow planet.
Rahu is responsible for desire, ambition, obsession and the pull toward what is foreign or new. It shows the area of life a person is here to learn. In that area it pushes hard until the lesson is taken in.

Dignity, Friendships and Results
The classical texts do not give Rahu one agreed sign of exaltation. Vedicmarga follows the combined view, in which Rahu is strong in Taurus and Gemini and weaker in Scorpio and Sagittarius. Each sign is read in full in Rahu in the 12 signs.
A traditional dictum sums up Rahu's temperament as Shanivat Rahu: Rahu acts like Saturn. It shares Saturn's slowness to give and its link with the outsider, the foreign and the hidden.
Rahu counts Mercury, Venus and Saturn as friends, the Moon and Jupiter as neutral, and the Sun and Mars as enemies. These planetary friendships shape how Rahu behaves with each planet it joins.
Having no sign of its own, Rahu gives much of its result through other planets. Laghu Parashari advises reading the nodes through the lord of their sign and the planets they sit with. Check both before judging Rahu.
Does Rahu Have Aspects?
The traditions differ on this. Some astrologers give Rahu full aspects on the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself, like Jupiter.

Special Yogas Involving Rahu
Grahan Yoga. Rahu with the Sun or the Moon, a later name taken from the eclipse. With the Sun it clouds confidence and the father's matters, and with the Moon it unsettles the mind.
Guru Chandala Yoga. Rahu with Jupiter, another name from later tradition. Rahu can distort the teacher's judgement, so advice and belief need care. The full reading is in Rahu and Jupiter conjunction.
Angarak Yoga. Mars with Rahu, also a later name. Rahu inflates Mars's heat, so anger, accidents and rash decisions need watching.
Rahu Mahadasha
Rahu runs 18 years in the Vimshottari sequence. It rules Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha, so anyone born with the Moon in one of these nakshatras starts life in the Rahu period.
A strong Rahu period brings sudden rise, foreign opportunities, success in technology or media, and a large increase in ambition. Many people make their biggest leap in these years.
A weak Rahu period brings confusion, anxiety, scandal and a chase after things that do not satisfy. Addictions and deceptions are the common traps. The house Rahu occupies shows where the strain lands.
Rahu matures at 42. The hunger it brings often finds its proper channel around that age.
Rahu in Transit
Rahu moves backward through the zodiac, with Ketu always opposite, and spends about 18 months in each sign. It completes the zodiac in about 18 years.

Signs of a Strong Rahu and a Weak Rahu
A strong Rahu shows as bold ambition that gets results. The person breaks into new fields, does well abroad or with foreigners, and handles technology, media and crowds with ease.
They take risks others avoid, and with a strong Rahu those risks usually pay.
A weak or afflicted Rahu shows as a hunger that never settles. Anxiety, confusion, fear without a clear cause and a pull toward intoxicants are the usual signs, along with a habit of chasing shortcuts.
Rahu in Scorpio or Sagittarius, and Rahu with the Sun, the Moon or Mars, are the usual sources of strain. A strong dispositor, meaning the lord of Rahu's sign, calms much of it.
What the Scriptures Teach About Rahu's Nature
Vedic astrology and the Puranas describe the same planets, and Rahu's stories carry the nature an astrologer reads in a chart. These 3 accounts come from the Bhagavata Purana, the Brihat Samhita and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
The Asura at the Churning
The Bhagavata Purana (8.9) tells of the churning of the ocean. As the nectar was served, one asura disguised himself as a god and sat among the gods, next to the Sun and the Moon. They recognised him, and Vishnu's discus cut off his head.
The nectar had touched only the head, so the head became immortal, and Brahma made it a graha (8.9.26). The text adds that Rahu remains an enemy of the Sun and the Moon, and attacks them at the full and new Moon.
This story holds Rahu's nature. He reached immortality by impersonation. In a chart Rahu gives what it wants through unusual means and at speed. The disguise also explains its link with deception and with roles played on a public stage.

Varahamihira and the Shadow
Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita (Chapter 5) opens with the popular belief that Rahu, though beheaded, lives on as a planet because he tasted the nectar. He then tests it.
He asks how a serpent could eclipse with its head or tail without hiding the half of the sky that lies between them. His answer comes in verse 8. In a lunar eclipse the Moon enters the Earth's shadow, and in a solar eclipse the Moon covers the Sun.
This is why Rahu is called a shadow. It is a point in space where the paths of the Sun and the Moon cross, and it acts through what it covers. In a chart it works the same way, through the house it occupies and the planets it joins.
Varaha, the Avatar of Rahu
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 2) links each avatar of Vishnu to a planet. It names Varaha, the boar, as the avatar that came through Rahu.
In the Bhagavata Purana (3.13) Varaha dives to the bottom of the great waters to lift the Earth back up. The story shows the useful side of Rahu: going into depths that others avoid, and bringing something valuable back. A well placed Rahu gives this capacity.

Remedies for Rahu
Durga worship, Saturday observance and Rahu's beej mantra are the standard remedies. The mantra and its count are on the Navagraha beej mantras page.
The traditional charity is dark cloth, sesame and oil, given on Saturday. Avoiding intoxicants is part of every Rahu remedy, since Rahu's illusions enter most easily through them.
Hessonite is Rahu's gemstone. It suits some charts and harms others, so confirm it against the full chart. A personal consultation weighs Rahu's dispositor and house before any stone is worn.
