A planet in retrograde motion appears to move backwards through the zodiac. Nothing actually reverses in the sky. The planet is being seen from a moving Earth. For a stretch of weeks it seems to fall behind the signs it has already crossed.
Vedic astrology reads that apparent reversal as a change in how a planet delivers, and the classical position on it surprises most readers. A retrograde planet is often held to be stronger than a direct one.

Cheshta Bala and the Strength Question
Shadbala counts 6 sources of strength, and one of them is cheshta bala, the strength of motion. A planet moving slowly, stationing, or running retrograde scores high on that measure. A planet moving at full forward speed scores low.
So the classical reading treats retrograde motion as a strength state. The planet is closer to the Earth, brighter in the sky, and holding its position longer than usual.
A retrograde planet keeps its capacity and turns its significations inward. Whatever it governs comes back for a second look, and the extra strength goes into that review.
Which Planets Turn Retrograde, and How Often
The Sun and the Moon never turn retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are retrograde permanently. The other 5 alternate.

The fourth column is the one that matters. When a retrograde period is longer than the planet's usual stay in a sign, the transit stops being a single window.
How Retrograde Changes a Transit
There are 3 changes, and the first is purely mechanical.
A retrograde planet can step back into the sign it just left and then return. One house transit becomes 2 or 3 separate windows with gaps between them. Mars normally holds a sign for 45 days. With a retrograde inside it, the same house can carry Mars for 5 or 6 months.
The second is the reading. The house under a retrograde planet gets a second pass over ground it already covered. Matters that looked settled reopen, and matters left unfinished come back asking to be completed.
The third is timing. Work that belongs to review, audit, repair and revision goes better in a retrograde window than at any other point in that planet's cycle. Work that needs a clean start goes better once the planet is direct.

Mercury Retrograde
The cycle gives 3 windows a year of about 3 weeks each, which is more retrograde time than any other planet.
Documents resurface. Conversations reopen. Decisions made a month ago get revisited, and something agreed in passing turns out to need restating.
Contracts already in motion benefit from the second reading. Contracts being signed for the first time do better after the station.
Venus Retrograde
Venus turns retrograde once every 18 months and holds it for about 40 days. Only Mars leaves a longer gap between windows.
Relationships and money both get reconsidered. Old connections reappear, and an arrangement that was accepted without much thought starts being examined. A new commitment made inside this window tends to be revisited later. An existing one being reviewed is exactly what the period is for.
Mars Retrograde
Mars runs retrograde for 2 to 2.5 months every 2 years, and its normal stay in a sign is 45 days.
Effort that was pushing outward turns inward. Plans get redrawn, projects already launched get taken apart and rebuilt, and direct confrontation produces less than usual. The long window lets a single house carry Mars for most of half a year. That is the only time a Mars transit behaves like a slow planet.
Jupiter Retrograde
Jupiter spends about 4 months of every year retrograde, inside a sign transit of roughly 12 months.
A third of every Jupiter transit is therefore retrograde. Beliefs, teachers and the path being followed all come under review during it. Study already begun deepens. Study begun fresh in the window tends to be restarted later on different terms.
Saturn Retrograde
Saturn is retrograde for about 140 days a year, inside a sign transit that runs 2.5 years.
Saturn retrograde is a regular feature of every Saturn transit. Treat it as part of the transit itself. Work already done gets inspected. Structures built earlier are tested for whether they hold, and the ones that do not get rebuilt in the same window.
Rahu and Ketu
Both nodes move backwards permanently, so retrograde is not a phase for them. There is no station, no direct period and no review window, because their whole motion is the backward one.
A nodal transit feels different from the others for that reason, since it never pauses to reconsider.
The Stations
The turn itself matters more than the weeks either side of it. A planet slows, halts, and reverses, and cheshta bala peaks at that halt.
The day a planet turns retrograde and the day it turns direct are the 2 sharpest points in the cycle. Matters governed by that planet tend to surface, stall or break open around them.
Mark those dates separately from the retrograde window as a whole. A Saturn station sitting on your 10th house carries more weight than any of the 140 days around it.
Retrograde in Transit and Retrograde at Birth
These are 2 separate readings and they get confused often.
A planet retrograde in the birth chart carries that condition for life. It shapes how the planet delivers in its own dasha and how its significations show up across the whole chart.
A planet retrograde in transit is a passing condition lasting weeks or months. It changes the texture of that particular window and nothing beyond it.
Where both apply at once, the effect compounds. A natally retrograde Mercury meeting a Mercury retrograde transit produces the most pronounced review period that chart will see.
What Retrograde Does Not Do
It does not break communication, travel or agreements. That reputation is larger than the principle behind it, and nothing in the classical treatment of retrograde motion supports it.
The planet is not weakened either. Cheshta bala says the opposite. A retrograde planet in a house with good bindus often delivers more than one moving quickly through.
A retrograde period stays usable. One kind of work gets easier and another gets harder, which makes it a scheduling matter.
How to Use This
Check which planets are retrograde before reading any transit. The transit pages carry the current state and the station dates for each.
Then sort the work. Reviews, repairs, revisions, renegotiations and returns to abandoned work all belong in the retrograde window of the planet that governs them. Anything that needs a clean launch belongs after the station.
Check the running Vimshottari period as well. A retrograde transit of the planet owning the current dasha is felt far more sharply. A personal consultation weighs it against the full chart.
