Vargottama Calculator: Planets in the Same Sign in D1 and D9

A planet is Vargottama when it sits in the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and the navamsa (D9). This calculator checks your ascendant and all 9 planets, from the Sun to Ketu. It lists every point that holds the same sign in both charts. For each one it shows the degree, the dignity and a note when the degree is close to a range edge.

How Is It Calculated

Each sign of 30° is divided into 9 parts of 3°20' to form the navamsa (D9) chart. The count starts from a different sign for each element. It starts from Aries for fire signs, Capricorn for earth signs, Libra for air signs and Cancer for water signs.

Because of this count, a sign repeats itself in only 1 navamsa. In a movable sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) it is the 1st navamsa, from 0° to 3°20'. In a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) it is the 5th, from 13°20' to 16°40'. In a dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) it is the 9th, from 26°40' to 30°.

The calculator reads the sidereal degree of your ascendant and each planet. It then checks every degree against these 3 ranges. Varahamihira gives the same rule in Brihat Jataka, chapter 1.

Understanding Your Result

A Vargottama planet holds the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa, so its sign results repeat in both charts. It is counted as strong, close to a planet in its own sign.

The effect builds on the planet's dignity. An exalted or own-sign planet that is also Vargottama is a very strong placement. Its dasha tends to deliver its results clearly. A debilitated planet that is Vargottama stays debilitated in both charts, so check it for Neecha Bhanga before judging its results.

Read the house and lordship next. A Vargottama lord of the 10th tends to give steady career results. A Vargottama lord of the 6th gives steady 6th house results, such as service, competition and daily work.

The result shows a warning when a point sits within 0°10' of a range edge. At that distance, a small error in birth time can move it into the next navamsa. Confirm the birth time before relying on a result with this warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Vargottama planet?

A Vargottama planet occupies the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and the navamsa (D9). The word joins varga, a divisional chart, with uttama, the best. The planet carries its sign into the navamsa unchanged, which gives it extra strength.

In which degrees is a planet Vargottama?

Only in 1 navamsa of each sign. It is 0° to 3°20' in a movable sign, 13°20' to 16°40' in a fixed sign and 26°40' to 30° in a dual sign.

Is a Vargottama planet always strong?

It is steady in its sign, and its final strength depends on dignity, house and aspects. An exalted or own-sign Vargottama planet is very strong. A debilitated Vargottama planet stays debilitated in both charts, so check it for Neecha Bhanga and read it with the rest of the chart.

Can the lagna be Vargottama?

Yes. The ascendant is Vargottama when its degree falls in the same ranges as a planet. A Vargottama ascendant gives a steady personality and strengthens the whole chart. The ascendant moves quickly, so this result needs an exact birth time.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. The lagna crosses a navamsa in about 13 minutes and the Moon in about 6 hours. Near a range edge, the result depends on the minute of birth.
