How to Calculate Arudha Lagna

The Arudha Lagna is the Arudha Pada of the 1st house. It is found in 4 steps:

1. Find your Lagna, the rising sign at birth. The rising sign calculator gives it.
2. Find the Lagna lord and the sign it occupies.
3. Count the signs from the Lagna to the Lagna lord, counting the Lagna as 1.
4. Count the same number of signs onward from the Lagna lord. The sign you reach is the Arudha Lagna.

Some Jaimini astrologers also treat Ketu as a co-lord of Scorpio and Rahu as a co-lord of Aquarius. They count from the stronger of the 2 lords.

Example 1: The Standard Count

Take an Aries Lagna with Mars in Gemini. From Aries to Gemini is 3 signs (Aries 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3). Counting 3 signs from Gemini (Gemini 1, Cancer 2, Leo 3) reaches Leo, so the Arudha Lagna is Leo.

The Exception Rule

The Arudha cannot fall in the Lagna itself or in the 7th house from it. When the count lands on either one, it moves:

• The count lands on the Lagna: take the 10th sign from the Lagna. This happens when the Lagna lord sits in the 1st or the 7th house.
• The count lands on the 7th house: take the 10th sign from that 7th house, which is the 4th from the Lagna. This happens when the Lagna lord sits in the 4th or the 10th house.

Example 2: When the Exception Applies

Take an Aries Lagna with Mars in Cancer, the 4th house. From Aries to Cancer is 4 signs, and 4 signs from Cancer reaches Libra. Libra is the 7th from Aries, so the exception applies.

The 10th sign from Libra is Cancer. The Arudha Lagna is Cancer, the 4th house from the Lagna.
