How Is Vimshottari Dasha Calculated?
Vimshottari Dasha is calculated from the Moon’s position at the time of birth. Specifically, it uses the nakshatra (lunar mansion) the Moon occupies and its exact degree within that nakshatra.
Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine planets. The nakshatra your Moon sits in determines which planet’s Mahadasha you are born into. The Moon’s degree within that nakshatra determines how much of that first dasha has already elapsed at birth, which sets the starting point of your entire timeline.
From there, the periods follow a fixed sequence and fixed durations totaling 120 years: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, then Mercury. The calculator performs all of this automatically once you enter your birth details.
