How Is the D10 Chart Calculated?
Each 30° sign is split into 10 equal parts of 3°, which gives 120 Dasamsas across the zodiac. A planet falls into one part by its exact longitude.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra sets the counting rule. In an odd sign, the 10 parts start from the same sign. In an even sign, they start from the 9th sign from it.
Two Worked Examples
Take a planet at 17° Aries. It sits in the 6th part, which runs from 15° to 18°. Aries is an odd sign, so the count starts at Aries, and the 6th sign from Aries is Virgo. The planet goes to Virgo in the D10.
Now take a planet at 5° Taurus, in the 2nd part (3° to 6°). Taurus is even, so the count starts at Capricorn, the 9th sign from Taurus. The 2nd sign from Capricorn is Aquarius.
The 10 Deities of the Dasamsa
BPHS assigns a ruling deity to each of the 10 parts. The order below applies to odd signs. In even signs it runs in reverse, from Ananta back to Indra.
| Part | Degrees | Deity (odd signs) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0° to 3° | Indra |
| 2 | 3° to 6° | Agni |
| 3 | 6° to 9° | Yama |
| 4 | 9° to 12° | Rakshasa |
| 5 | 12° to 15° | Varuna |
| 6 | 15° to 18° | Vayu |
| 7 | 18° to 21° | Kubera |
| 8 | 21° to 24° | Ishana |
| 9 | 24° to 27° | Brahma |
| 10 | 27° to 30° | Ananta |
The D9 Navamsa chart, read for marriage, is built on the same principle with 9 parts per sign.
Understanding Your D10 Chart Result
Your result shows:
- The full D10 chart with every planet placed by sign and house
- The D10 Lagna and the sign it falls in
- The 10th house of the D10 and its lord, the centre of any career reading
- Planets that shape your profession, by their placement and strength
Read the D10 together with the D1 birth chart. A career has to be promised in the D1 before the D10 can refine it. Timing comes from the dasha and transits applied to the birth chart.
How to Read Your D10 Chart for Career
Work through the chart in this order.
- The D10 Lagna and its lord. When the Lagna lord is strong and well placed, work tends to progress steadily.
- The 10th house of the D10 and its lord. These, with any planets in the house, show the kind of work that suits you.
- The D1 10th lord in the D10. Find where the birth chart's 10th lord sits here. Its sign and house show how your career promise plays out.
- The Amatyakaraka. In Jaimini astrology this is the planet of career. Find it with the Amatyakaraka calculator, then check its place in the D10.
- Dasha activation. Career events come in the dasha of planets tied to the D10 Lagna, the 10th house or its lord.
A planet in its own or exaltation sign in the D10 gives good results in work during its dasha. A debilitated planet here calls for more effort in the matters it rules. For career questions about your own chart, you can ask our AI astrologer.

Frequently asked questions
What is a D10 chart?
The D10, or Dasamsa, is the 10th divisional chart, with each sign split into 10 parts of 3°. Astrologers read it for career, profession, status and public life.
Is the Dasamsa the same as the Dashamsa?
Yes. Dasamsa, Dashamsa and Dashamsha are spellings of the same chart, and D10 is its short name.
Do I need an exact birth time for the D10?
Yes, more than for the birth chart. Because each part is only 3° wide, a birth time a few minutes out can move the D10 Lagna and change the whole chart.
Which house do I read first in the D10?
Start with the D10 Lagna and its lord, then the 10th house of the D10 and its lord. Planets in that 10th house, and the sign the birth chart's 10th lord takes here, show the kind of work that suits you.
What does it mean when a planet is strong in the D10 and ordinary in the birth chart?
The birth chart shows the promise and the divisional chart shows how it plays out in that area of life. A planet strong in the D10 gives career results during its dasha, even from an ordinary birth chart placement. The reverse also holds.
Can the D10 tell me which profession to choose?
It shows the nature of the work that suits you. A specific job title comes from reading that with the rest of your chart. The Sun favours authority and administration, Mercury trade and writing, Saturn labour and long service. Compare these pointers with the work you already feel drawn to.
