Saptamsa (D7) Chart Calculator

The result gives the full Saptamsa chart, the D7 Lagna, and the sign and degree each planet holds in the division. It also names the planets sitting in the same sign as in your birth chart, which is the steadiest signal a varga carries.

An accurate birth time matters more here than in the birth chart. Each part of the Saptamsa spans a little over four degrees, so the Lagna of the D7 changes roughly every seventeen minutes.

How the Saptamsa is calculated

Each sign of thirty degrees is divided into seven equal parts. One part measures four degrees, seventeen minutes and roughly nine seconds. Across the twelve signs this gives eighty four Saptamsas in the full zodiac.

The counting follows the rule the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra states. For an odd sign the seven parts are counted from that same sign. For an even sign they are counted from the seventh sign from it.

A planet's exact longitude decides which part it falls in. The same rule of division governs the D9 Navamsa chart and every other varga.

How the Saptamsa is read

The order of reading starts in the birth chart. The 5th house, its lord and Guru as putra karaka hold the promise. The Saptamsa refines what is already there. A varga adds detail to a promise the D1 has made and creates nothing on its own.

Inside the D7, read the Lagna and its lord first. Then look at the 5th house of the Saptamsa, the planets in it, and the sign your birth chart's 5th lord takes here. Guru placed well in the D7 supports the reading; Guru weak in both charts asks for patience and for work on the mind.

Timing belongs to the Vimshottari Dasha and to transits read from the birth chart. The Saptamsa says what the period tends to give when it arrives. The dasha says when.

Do I need an exact birth time for the D7?

Yes. Each sign is divided into seven parts of just over four degrees, so the D7 Lagna changes about every seventeen minutes. A birth time a quarter of an hour out can give a different chart.

Can the D7 tell me how many children I will have?

Classical texts count from the 5th house and its lord, and the counts they give differ between texts. Treat any number as a pointer. The chart reads the quality and the timing of that part of life more reliably than it counts.

What does it mean when a planet keeps the same sign in the D7 as in my birth chart?

It holds its ground. A planet repeating its rashi sign gives its nature in that area of life plainly. It keeps the footing the other planets change. In the Navamsa the same condition is called vargottama.
