Special Yogas Involving Mars
Ruchaka Yoga. Mars in its own sign or exaltation, in a kendra from the ascendant. One of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, it gives courage, leadership and a strong body.
Chandra-Mangala Yoga. The Moon and Mars together, or in mutual aspect. It gives drive in money matters and quick business instinct.
Angarak Yoga. Mars with Rahu, a combination named in later tradition. Rahu inflates Mars's heat, so anger, accidents and rash decisions need watching.

Such people protect those around them, finish hard tasks and handle machines, land or conflict well.
Anger that cannot be controlled belongs to a weak Mars, along with rash decisions, frequent injuries and quarrels over small things. Low courage and a habit of giving up are the other form of a weak Mars.

What the Puranas Teach About Mars's Nature
Vedic astrology and the Puranas describe the same planets. Mangal is both the planet Mars and a deva with a history, and his stories carry the nature an astrologer reads in a chart.
These accounts come from the Shiva Purana, the Padma Purana and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
Born of Shiva's Sweat, Raised by the Earth
The Shiva Purana (Rudra Samhita, Parvati Khanda, Chapter 10) tells of Mars's birth. Drops of sweat fell from Shiva's forehead onto the Earth. They took the form of a tawny-coloured child with 4 arms, of a brilliance hard to bear.
Shiva asked the Earth to raise him and said the child would be known by her name. He was called Bhauma, the son of the Earth. He worshipped Shiva for a long time at Kashi, and by Shiva's grace he became a planet.
The story explains why Mars rules land and property. It also explains his names, since Kuja, Bhauma and Bhumiputra all mean the son of the Earth, as Parashara lists them. Born from exertion, Mars is the planet of effort, and devotion is what raised him to a graha.
The Commander of the Grahas
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 3) sets the planets out as a royal court. The Sun and the Moon are royal, Mercury is the prince, Jupiter and Venus are ministers, and Saturn is the servant. Mars is the army chief.
The Padma Purana describes Bhauma as sharp, fierce, red-bodied and powerful, with the nature of a stroke of lightning.
Both texts show the commander. Mars acts fast and decides fast, and it works best under discipline, the way an army works under orders. In a chart, a disciplined Mars protects the houses it touches.
Narasimha, the Avatar of Mars
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 2) links each avatar of Vishnu to a planet. It names Narasimha as the avatar that came through Mars.
In the Bhagavata Purana (7.8) Narasimha appears from a pillar to protect the young devotee Prahlada from his father Hiranyakashipu. His ferocity is terrifying, and it serves one purpose, which is the protection of the innocent.
This is the strong Mars. Its anger exists, it is directed, and it defends what should be defended. Mars remedies often go through Narasimha and Hanuman for this reason, since both show strength in service.
