What Is a Beej Mantra?
Beej means seed. A beej mantra is built from single syllables, such as hram or shram, that have no dictionary meaning. Tradition treats each syllable as the sound form of a deity, the way a seed holds a whole tree.
The planetary beej mantras follow one pattern. Om comes first. Then come 3 seed syllables with the vowels a, i and au, followed by sah. The last words give the planet's name with namah, which means salutations.
So the meaning of every line is simple. The seed syllables call the planet, and the closing words bow to it.

Sun Beej Mantra (Surya)
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः ॥
Om hram hrim hraum sah Suryaya namah
Meaning: Om, the 3 seed syllables of Surya and sah; salutations to Surya, the Sun.
The Sun stands for the self, confidence, the father and authority. This mantra is chanted when the Sun is weak or under pressure in the chart, or during a Sun dasha.

Moon Beej Mantra (Chandra)

Om shram shrim shraum sah Chandramase namah
Meaning: Om, the 3 seed syllables of Chandra and sah; salutations to Chandra, the Moon.
The Moon stands for the mind, feelings, the mother and home. People chant this mantra when the Moon is waning, afflicted or placed in a hard house.

Mars Beej Mantra (Mangal)

Meaning: Om, the 3 seed syllables of Mangal and sah; salutations to Bhauma, the son of the Earth, who is Mars.
Mars stands for courage, energy, siblings and land. The mantra is chanted for Mangal dosha, for a Mars dasha, or when Mars sits with Rahu or Saturn.

Rahu is the north node of the Moon. It stands for desire, foreign things and sudden change. People chant this mantra in a Rahu dasha or when Rahu joins the Sun or Moon.

Ketu Beej Mantra

Ketu is the south node of the Moon. It stands for detachment, past skills and spiritual search. The mantra is chanted in a Ketu dasha and when Ketu sits with a key planet.

How to Chant a Navagraha Beej Mantra
Pick the planet first. Chant for the planet whose dasha you are running, or the one that is weak or troubled in your chart.
Start on that planet's day, in the morning after a bath. See days of the week in Vedic astrology for the day lords.
Sit facing east or north and use a mala of 108 beads. Keep the same place and time each day.
Fix a daily number of malas and keep to it. The full japa count is often spread over 21 to 40 days.
Chant clearly and without hurry. Each syllable should be heard, even when you chant softly.
About the Japa Counts
The counts in the table are the ones printed in most japa manuals. Many of them cite Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra as the source. We have not yet confirmed this in a printed edition of that text, so treat the numbers as the standard tradition.
A full count is a large practice. Saturn's 23,000 repetitions is about 213 malas. Most people chant 1 to 11 malas a day as a regular practice and complete the full count only for a specific purpose.
Which Planet Should You Chant For?
Look at the dasha you are running. The Mahadasha lord and the Antardasha lord shape the current period, and their mantras are the usual starting point.
Next, look for a planet that is debilitated, combust, or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. A planet joined by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn also calls for attention.
