A Raj Yoga is a combination the texts tie to rank, authority and a rise in life. This calculator checks your chart for the Raj Yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika, Saravali and Uttara Kalamrita. The rules run in 6 groups: lordship, dignity, Neecha Bhanga, Vipareeta, the royal yogas and the Jaimini karakas. Each yoga found shows its verse, its grade of Full, Half or Quarter, and the dasha periods in which it gives results.

Get Started NowA Raj Yoga raises the person in the field its planets rule, and the grade says how far. Count the yogas last, because one Full yoga whose lords rule the coming dashas does more than 5 Quarter yogas whose periods have passed. Read the lagna lord and the Moon first, then the yoga, then the dasha. The rise comes through work in that field.
The Kendra-Trikona Raj Yoga is the base of the whole scheme. A kendra lord brings the means and a trikona lord brings the fortune, and their association puts the 2 together. The house they meet in names the field of the rise. Each pair in the chart is shown on its own card.
Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga joins the 9th lord with the 10th lord. Fortune and work support each other, and the person rises through their own profession with the help of elders and teachers. The yoga gives most when the 2 lords meet in a kendra or trikona and least when they meet in a dusthana.
A Yogakaraka is 1 planet that owns a kendra and a trikona for your lagna, so it carries the Raj Yoga by itself. Its dasha is the period of rise, and its house shows the field. Read Yogakaraka Planets for each lagna's planet and what it gives.
A node in a kendra or trikona, joined with or aspected by the lord of the other group, takes on that lord's Raj Yoga. The node then gives the result in its own dasha, often through an unexpected route. Read the node's dispositor to see how steady the gain is.
The lagna lord and the 5th lord in exchange join the self with intelligence and past merit. The person's own judgement carries them upward, and the mind serves the body's aims. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 39.6-7 calls this a Maha Raj Yoga.
The 5th lord and the 9th lord together tie merit to fortune. Study, children, teachers and belief all support the person's rise. This yoga tends to show as help that arrives when it is needed. It gives in the dashas of the 2 lords.
The 4th lord and the 10th lord in exchange, connected with the 5th and 9th lords, join home and work with merit and fortune. The person gains property, position and comfort together. The rule here reads the connection with the 5th and 9th lords in the wide sense, as the conventions note explains.
The lords of the 1st, 4th, 5th and 10th all in the 9th house is a rare pattern. Self, home, merit and work all sit in the house of fortune, and the texts promise rank and wealth from it. Its rarity is its strength.
The lagna lord and the 10th lord in exchange join the self with the work. The person is known by what they do and rises through their profession. The dasha of either lord is a period of advancement at work.
A 10th lord in its own or exaltation sign, aspecting the lagna, gives a strong career that shapes the person's identity. The work is steady and the person is respected for it. The 10th lord's dasha brings the promotion.
Chamara Yoga has 2 forms: an exalted lagna lord in a kendra under Jupiter's aspect, or 2 benefics together in the 1st, 7th, 9th or 10th. The person is well spoken, learned and respected, and holds a position of honour. The card says which form the chart makes.
A lagna lord at full strength in a kendra gives a sound body, self-confidence and the means to act. Every other yoga in the chart gives more when this one holds, because the person has the strength to use what the chart offers.
Jupiter's aspect on Venus joins wisdom to comfort and relationships. Phaladeepika counts it among the Raj Yogas because the person gains through marriage, the arts and the good will of others. It gives most when Venus is well placed and free of the avoid list of the lagna.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names the Raj Yoga planets for each lagna in chapter 34. A named pair in association forms the yoga, and a single named planet is shown as information with its strength. Read the named planet's house and dignity to see how the yoga is delivered.
Several exalted planets raise the whole chart. With 3 the yoga is mild, with 4 or 5 strong, and with 6 or more very strong. Each exalted planet gives its best in its own dasha, and the count says how much of life is covered by such periods.
Three or more planets in exaltation or own sign in the kendras give a chart with strong pillars. The person has means, position and the health to use them. Phaladeepika grades 5 or more as very strong.
An exalted Jupiter, Venus or Mercury with another benefic in a kendra gives rank through learning, refinement or trade. The benefic company keeps the gain clean. Expect the gain in the exalted planet's dasha.
Benefics in all 4 kendras and malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th put every planet where it serves. The benefics hold the pillars of the chart and the malefics fight the person's battles. The texts promise rank and a long, comfortable life.
Malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th give courage, victory over rivals and gains. These are the upachaya houses, where a malefic works for the person. The card says whether the count was made from the lagna or from the Moon.
A Vargottama lagna or Moon holds the same sign in the rashi chart and the navamsa. The person's nature and mind are steady and their promise is confirmed in the D9. Phaladeepika counts it among the Raj Yogas. The Vargottama Calculator lists every such point in your chart.
A Vargottama lagna lord in a kendra or the 9th, with a strong 9th lord, joins a steady self with a strong fortune. The person's efforts are backed by luck and elders. Both lords' dashas carry it.
Two or more planets in their dig bala houses give a chart in which the planets face the right direction. Each such planet gives its results with ease in its own dasha. Three or more make the yoga strong.
A wealth lord in a kendra from the Moon, with Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th or 11th, gives wealth through a steady mind. Phaladeepika reads it as rank and riches. The dasha of the wealth lord is the period of gain.
The dispositor of the debilitated planet, or the lord of its exaltation sign, in a kendra from the lagna or Moon cancels the debility. The planet then gives its results after an early struggle, and the texts count the person among those who rise. Read Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga for the full account.
The debilitated planet, the lord of its sign and its exaltation lord in mutual kendras form a frame that holds the weak planet up. The rule is a draft and is shown for review.
The lord of the debilitated planet's sign aspecting it cancels the debility. The dispositor watches over its guest, and the planet's results come after a delay. The dasha of the dispositor is often the turning point.
A debilitated planet placed in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon gains the strength of its house. The person meets the planet's weakness early and turns it into a skill. The kendra gives the means to do so.
A retrograde planet in debility is read as strong, as though exalted, when it stands outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. Its results come from within, after reflection. Read Retrograde Planets in the Birth Chart for how such a planet works.
A debilitated planet in exchange with the lord of its sign is lifted by the exchange. The 2 planets share their houses, and the weak one takes the strength of its host. This rule comes from modern practice, and the card says so.
Harsha, Sarala and Vimala place the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th in one of those 3 houses. Harsha from the 6th lord gives victory over rivals and good health. Sarala from the 8th lord gives long life and freedom from fear, and Vimala from the 12th lord contentment and a good end. The gain comes through a loss that turns out well.
Vipareeta Raj Yoga has the 3 dusthana lords tied to one another and to no other house. Losses fall on enemies, debts and hidden matters, and the person rises when others fall. Read Vipareet Rajayoga for the conditions, and the Vipareeta Raja Yoga Calculator for the older reading on this site.
A Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga has one of the 5 planets from Mars to Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. Ruchaka from Mars gives courage and command, Bhadra from Mercury intellect and speech, and Hamsa from Jupiter wisdom and honour. Malavya from Venus gives comfort and the arts, and Shasha from Saturn authority through discipline. Read Pancha Mahapurush Yoga for each of the 5.
Adhi Yoga has benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon. The person leads, as a head of a household, an officer or a minister. The grade rises with the number of the 3 houses filled. Benefics in all 3 give the full result.
The Atmakaraka and the Putrakaraka together in the lagna or the 5th, or both in strength, form the Maha Raj Yoga of the karakas. Benefic aspect completes it. The soul's aim and its merit work together, and the person rises to a high position. The dashas of the 2 karakas are the periods of rise.
The lagna lord with the Atmakaraka in the 1st, 5th or 7th, under benefic aspect or company, joins the body's aims to the soul's. The person knows what they want and has the means to reach it. Read Atmakaraka and Darakaraka for the karaka itself.
Benefics in the 2nd, 4th and 5th from the lagna lord or the Atmakaraka surround the person with support. Malefics in the 3rd and 6th from the same point give them fighters on the flanks. The pattern promises rank and a settled life.
Venus stands in the Karakamsha, its 5th, the lagna or the Arudha Lagna, joined with or aspected by Jupiter or the Moon. The yoga gives rank through refinement, relationships and the arts. The Karakamsha frame is read in the D1 and the D9 until the frame is chosen in the rules.
Benefics in the kendras from the Karakamsha support the soul's aim from every side. The person finds help wherever they turn in the field the Atmakaraka rules. The card names the frame the count was made in.
The Arudha Lagna and the Darapada in mutual kendras, in 3/11 from each other, or in mutual trikonas, tie the public image to partnerships. Gains come through partners and the person's standing rises through them. Read What Is Arudha Pada for the padas.
Exalted planets, or Jupiter or Venus, in the Arudha Lagna with no malefic argala give a public image of wealth and honour that holds. The person is seen as prosperous and the image is backed by substance.
Venus aspecting the 11th from the Arudha Lagna, with a benefic in the Arudha Lagna, gives gains that support the person's standing. Income comes through comfort, refinement and the good will of others.
One planet aspecting the lagna, the Hora Lagna and the Ghatika Lagna at once joins the self, wealth and power under a single influence. The person rises in that planet's field. The Hora and Ghatika Lagnas move fast, so this yoga needs a confirmed birth time. When the engine has not returned them, the card says the check was not made.
The 10th lord with the Amatyakaraka, or with its dispositor, joins the work to the karaka of career and counsel. The person rises through their profession and through the people they advise. The Amatyakaraka Calculator names the planet.
The Atmakaraka or the Amatyakaraka in a kendra or trikona is a royal association, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra counts it in chapter 40. The rule is graded Quarter by default because the placement is common. Read it with the karaka's dignity and the rest of the group.
The lagna lord or the Atmakaraka in association with the 5th lord, in a kendra or trikona, joins the self to merit and intelligence. The person rises through their own judgement and past good work. Watch for the 5th lord's dasha.
The Atmakaraka and the Amatyakaraka in association join the soul's aim with the career. The pairing is widely quoted and has not been traced to a primary text, so the rule is a draft and hidden by default.
How Is It Calculated
Group A is lordship: the kendra and trikona lords, the Yogakaraka, the exchanges and the per-lagna planets of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra chapter 34. Group B is dignity: exalted planets, Vargottama, dig bala and the placement of benefics and malefics. Group C is Neecha Bhanga and Group D is Vipareeta. Group E holds the Pancha Mahapurusha and Adhi Yogas, and Group F reads the Jaimini karakas, the Karakamsha and the Arudha Lagna.
An association is one of the 4 kinds in BPHS 34.11-12. They are an exchange of signs, a conjunction, one planet in the other's sign, or a mutual full aspect. A one-way aspect alone is never an association. Rahu and Ketu cast no aspect and act through the house they occupy.
Each yoga starts at a base score. Own sign, exaltation, Vargottama and Shadbala above the minimum add 1 each. Combustion, debilitation, a dusthana placement and lordship of a dusthana take 1 each. The score gives the grade of Full, Half or Quarter that BPHS 39.3-5 describes, and the tags on each card show what moved it.
A yoga gives results in the Vimshottari mahadasha and antardasha of the planets that form it. The card lists those periods from today to age 80 and flags the one running now.
Understanding Your Result
A Raj Yoga promises a rise in the field its planets rule. It promises rank, means and respect within that field, in proportion to the grade. It does not promise ease, and it does not promise the rise before the dasha arrives. Many people with sound Raj Yogas live quiet lives because the periods fall late or the lagna lord is weak.
The grade and the dasha matter more than the count. One Full yoga whose lords rule the next 15 years shapes a life. Five Quarter yogas whose periods have passed are a record of what was. Read the running and coming dashas against the cards before anything else.
A near miss is a combination 1 condition short of a named yoga, such as the 9th and 10th lords in adjacent signs. It is shown so that you know what the chart almost holds. It gives nothing by itself, and a transit or a divisional chart may complete it for a time. Read Kendras and Trikonas to see why these houses carry the yoga.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Raj Yoga?
A combination the texts tie to rank, authority and a rise in life. The base form joins a kendra lord with a trikona lord. The texts add others by dignity, cancellation of debility, the dusthana lords and the Jaimini karakas. A Raj Yoga gives in the field its planets rule and in the dasha of those planets.
Which texts are the rules from?
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (R. Santhanam numbering), Phaladeepika (V.S. Sastri), Saravali and Uttara Kalamrita. Each card names its verse; editions can differ by one or two.
What do Full, Half and Quarter mean?
BPHS 39.3-5 says a Raj Yoga gives results in full, half or quarter measure by strength. The grade here follows the strength tags: own sign, exaltation, Vargottama and Shadbala raise it; combustion, debilitation, a dusthana and dusthana lordship lower it.
When will a Raj Yoga give results?
In the Vimshottari mahadasha and antardasha of the planets that form it. The card lists those periods from today to age 80 and flags the one running now.
What is a near miss?
A combination one condition short of a named yoga, such as the 9th and 10th lords in adjacent signs. The page shows the three closest.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes. Every lordship depends on the lagna, which changes sign about every two hours, and the Hora and Ghatika lagnas move faster still.
