A yoga is a named combination of planets, lords and houses that the classical texts tie to a definite result. This calculator checks your chart for the yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika, Saravali and Uttara Kalamrita. Each yoga is grouped by category and shows the verse it comes from, with the tags that strengthen or weaken it and the dasha periods in which it gives results. The Raj Yogas have their own page, the Raj Yoga Calculator, and this page counts them with a link.

Get Started NowA yoga is a promise held in the chart, and the dasha decides when it is paid. Read each card with its tags. A yoga formed by a planet in its own sign gives more than one formed by a combust planet. Look for the yoga whose planets rule the coming dasha, because that is the one you will feel next.
Gajakesari joins the Moon's mind with Jupiter's judgement. The person keeps their head in a crisis, earns respect and finds teachers and elders willing to help. It gives most when Jupiter is in its own sign or exalted, and least when Jupiter is combust or in a dusthana. Read the full account in Gaj Kesari Yoga.
Budhaditya joins the Sun's purpose with Mercury's speech and reasoning. The person thinks clearly, speaks with authority and does well in study, accounts and administration. Mercury within a few degrees of the Sun is combust, and the yoga then gives its results with more effort. The house the pair occupies shows the field.
Chandra-Mangala joins the Moon with Mars and gives earning through one's own effort and enterprise. The person is quick to act on a feeling and does well in trade, property and work that needs nerve. The same pair can make the mind restless and the temper short, so the Moon's dignity decides how the energy is spent.
Dhana Yoga joins the 2 lords of income, the 2nd and the 11th, with each other or with the lords of self and fortune, the 1st, 5th and 9th. Money follows the person's own work and standing. The yoga pays in the dasha of the lords that form it, and the house they occupy names the source of the income.
Parivartana is an exchange of signs between 2 lords, and the 2 houses then work as one. Maha Parivartana between good houses gives rise, wealth and standing. Khala Parivartana with the 3rd gives mixed results, and Dainya Parivartana with a dusthana gives struggle before gain. The article Parivartana Yoga sets out the 3 classes.
Sunapha has a planet in the 2nd from the Moon. The person earns by their own effort and keeps what they earn. The planet in the 2nd colours the way. Jupiter gives it through wisdom, Venus through the arts, Mercury through trade, Mars through enterprise and Saturn through steady labour.
Anapha has a planet in the 12th from the Moon. It gives a pleasing manner, good health and a calm mind that lets go easily. The planet in the 12th shows the gift: Jupiter gives generosity, Venus grace, Mercury wit, Mars courage and Saturn patience.
Durudhara has planets on both sides of the Moon, in the 2nd and the 12th. The mind is supported from both ends, and the person has means, comfort and helpers. It is the fuller form of Sunapha and Anapha and rules out Kemadruma outright.
Kemadruma leaves the Moon alone, with no planet in the 2nd or the 12th from it. The person feels unsupported and can struggle with money and standing early in life. The tradition gives cancellations, and the card shows which of them hold in your chart. Read Kemadruma Yoga for the conditions and the cancellations.
Vesi has a planet in the 2nd from the Sun. The person is truthful, even in manner and steady in their aims. A benefic in the 2nd from the Sun gives an easy, well spoken nature, and a malefic gives a blunt one.
Vasi has a planet in the 12th from the Sun. The person is reflective, remembers what they learn and does well in work that needs quiet thought. The planet in the 12th names the gift, with a benefic giving the better result.
Ubhayachari has planets on both sides of the Sun, in the 2nd and the 12th. The person is supported in what they set out to do, has means and a good name, and is remembered well. It is the fuller form of Vesi and Vasi.
Amala has a natural benefic in the 10th from the lagna or the Moon. The person's work is honest and their name stays clean. Jupiter in the 10th gives counsel and teaching, Venus the arts and hospitality, Mercury trade and writing, and a strong Moon public service.
Lakshmi Yoga has the 9th lord strong in a kendra or trikona with a strong lagna lord. Fortune and effort work together, and the person gains wealth, comfort and a good name. This rule is a draft and is shown for review.
Saraswati Yoga has Jupiter, Venus and Mercury each in a kendra, trikona or the 2nd, with Jupiter well placed. It gives learning, eloquence, skill in the arts and a name that lasts. This rule is a draft and is shown for review.
A Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga has one of the 5 planets from Mars to Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. Ruchaka from Mars gives courage and command, Bhadra from Mercury intellect and speech, and Hamsa from Jupiter wisdom and honour. Malavya from Venus gives comfort and the arts, and Shasha from Saturn authority through discipline. Read Pancha Mahapurush Yoga for each of the 5.
Adhi Yoga has benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon. The person leads, as a head of a household, an officer or a minister. The grade rises with the number of the 3 houses filled. Benefics in all 3 give the full result.
Harsha, Sarala and Vimala place the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th in one of those 3 houses. Harsha from the 6th lord gives victory over rivals and good health. Sarala from the 8th lord gives long life and freedom from fear, and Vimala from the 12th lord contentment and a good end. The gain comes through a loss that turns out well.
Vipareeta Raj Yoga has the 3 dusthana lords tied to one another and to no other house. Losses fall on enemies, debts and hidden matters, and the person rises when others fall. Read Vipareet Rajayoga for the conditions, and the Vipareeta Raja Yoga Calculator for the older reading on this site.
How Is It Calculated
Houses are whole signs from the lagna. Aspects are the Parashari ones. Every planet aspects the 7th from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Rahu and Ketu cast no aspect here and act through the house they occupy.
An association is one of the 4 kinds in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 34.11-12. They are an exchange of signs, a conjunction, one planet in the other's sign, or a mutual full aspect. Benefics and malefics follow BPHS 3.11-13. Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the waxing Moon are benefic; the Sun, Mars, Saturn, the waning Moon and the nodes are malefic.
Each yoga starts at a base score. Own sign, exaltation, Vargottama and Shadbala above the minimum add to it. Combustion, debilitation, a dusthana placement and lordship of a dusthana take from it. The score gives the grade of Full, Half or Quarter, and the tags on each card show what moved it.
Understanding Your Result
A yoga describes a strength the chart holds, and the chart around it decides how much of that strength reaches life. Read the lagna lord, the Moon and the house the yoga occupies before the yoga itself. A Gajakesari in the 12th house gives its wisdom in solitude and foreign lands, and the same yoga in the 10th in public.
A weakened yoga still counts. The planets are still in the combination, and the person still carries that quality. The tags say the result comes with delay, effort or a cost, and the dignity of the planet says which.
The dasha decides the timing. A yoga gives results in the mahadasha and antardasha of the planets that form it, and the card lists those periods. A person with a strong Dhana Yoga whose dasha lords have no part in it waits until the period arrives. Yogas in Vedic Astrology sets out how the texts use them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a yoga in Vedic astrology?
A named combination of planets, lords and houses that the classical texts tie to a definite result. A yoga is a promise the chart holds. Its strength depends on the dignity and house of the planets that form it, and its timing on the dasha of those planets.
Which yogas does the calculator check?
Dhana Yogas and the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas. The Moon yogas (Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhara, Kemadruma) and the Sun yogas (Vesi, Vasi, Ubhayachari). Gajakesari, Budhaditya, Chandra-Mangala, Amala, Parivartana, Adhi, Neecha Bhanga and Vipareeta. Each carries its source. The Raj Yogas by lordship, dignity and the Jaimini karakas have their own page, the Raj Yoga Calculator, and this page counts them with a link.
What does "association" mean?
One of the four kinds of BPHS 34.11-12: an exchange of signs, a conjunction, one planet in the other's sign, or a mutual aspect. A one-way aspect alone is never an association.
Do Rahu and Ketu aspect?
Not here. They act on the house they occupy and can be aspected by a lord. That is how the Rahu-Ketu Raj Yoga of BPHS 34.16-17 is read.
Why is a yoga shown as weakened?
A planet that forms it is combust, debilitated without cancellation, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or rules a dusthana. Its Shadbala can fall short too. Own sign, exaltation, Vargottama and sufficient Shadbala count the other way.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes. The lagna and its lordships change every two hours, and every lordship yoga depends on them.
