How to Calculate Yogini Dasha

Yogini Dasha starts from the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth. The calculation takes 3 steps:

1. Take the number of the Moon's nakshatra, counting from Ashwini (1) to Revati (27) in the list of 27 nakshatras.
2. Add 3 and divide the total by 8.
3. The remainder gives your first Yogini, from 1 for Mangala to 7 for Siddha. A remainder of 0 gives Sankata.

The Moon's position inside its nakshatra sets how much of the first Yogini is left at birth. The periods then follow the fixed order in the table below.

A Worked Example

Say the Moon is at 15° Taurus. This falls in Rohini, the 4th nakshatra. 4 plus 3 gives 7, and 7 divided by 8 leaves 7, so the first dasha is Siddha, the Yogini of Venus.

Rohini spans 10° to 23°20′ Taurus, and the Moon has covered 5° of its 13°20′. That is 37.5% of the nakshatra, so 62.5% of the 7-year Siddha period remains. About 4 years and 4 months of Siddha are left at birth.

Rahu and Ketu were one body before they became 2 planets, so they share one Yogini. The first half of Sankata is Rahu's period and the second half is Ketu's.

The 8 periods add up to 36 years. After Sankata the sequence returns to Mangala, so a long life passes through the cycle 2 or 3 times.

How Yogini Antardasha Is Calculated

Each Yogini Mahadasha divides into 8 Antardashas. The first Antardasha belongs to the Mahadasha's own Yogini, and the rest follow the same fixed order.

The length of an Antardasha is the Mahadasha years multiplied by the Antardasha years, divided by 36. For Siddha in Siddha, 7 times 7 divided by 36 gives about 1 year and 4 months.
