Rahu and Ketu sit exactly opposite each other at all times. They form one axis, so a nodal transit is read as a pair. Rahu occupying the 1st means Ketu occupies the 7th, and the reading covers both ends at once.

How Rahu and Ketu Move

The nodes travel backwards through the zodiac. Where every other planet runs Aries to Taurus to Gemini, the nodes run Aries to Pisces to Aquarius. They hold one sign for about 18 months and complete the full circle in about 18.5 years.

They are retrograde for the whole of that journey. There is no direct phase and no station. A nodal transit has none of the stop-start rhythm that Jupiter, Saturn and Mars all have. It arrives, it stays for a year and a half, it leaves.

Rahu and Ketu have no Bhinnashtakavarga of their own. The system assigns bindus to 7 planets only, so the filter used in the Jupiter, Saturn and Mars readings does not exist here.

The Running Dasha

A transit of 18 months is long enough to cross several antardashas. A nodal transit landing during a Rahu or Ketu period is felt at full strength. The same transit during an unrelated period passes as a change of interest.

Rahu in the 11th, Ketu in the 5th

Rahu's strongest position in the 12. Gains, networks, large groups and long-held wishes all come forward at once.

Income rises, often from a source that is unconventional, foreign, or simply new. Circles widen fast. Goals that sat unfinished for years find a route, and the route is rarely the obvious one.

Creative work and speculation both lose their hold while this runs, which is a reasonable exchange over 18 months.

Reading the Same Axis from the Ascendant

Run the count again from the ascendant. The house Rahu occupies from there shows the department of life that actually fills up. The Ketu house shows the one quietly emptying.

Where the Moon count and the ascendant count land on the same axis, the 18 months are unmistakable. Where they differ, the Moon axis gives the craving and the ascendant axis gives the events.

Then check the dispositor from the ascendant as well. A node in a sign whose lord is well placed for your ascendant behaves very differently. A weak dispositor thins the whole 18 months.

What a Nodal Transit Does Not Do

Rahu does not create the desire. It enlarges one that the chart already holds, and 18 months is long enough for that enlargement to look like a personality change.

Ketu does not take things away. It removes interest, and the thing itself usually stays exactly where it was. People describe a Ketu house as a loss when what happened is that they stopped looking at it.

No nodal transit is entirely favourable, since both ends of an axis can never sit in supported houses together. A reading that promises only gain from a nodal period has left out the other half of the axis.
