Mercury, Venus and Saturn are all retrograde from 24 October to 13 November. Some websites place this retrograde in Scorpio. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and in it the whole retrograde loop falls inside Libra.
What a Retrograde Mercury Does
Seen from the Earth, a retrograde planet appears to move backwards for a few weeks. Mercury does this 3 times a year. The earlier loops of 2026 ran from 26 February to 21 March in Aquarius and from 29 June to 24 July.
Parashara gives a retrograde planet full cheshta bala, the strength that comes from motion, and Phaladeepika 4.5 calls retrograde planets strong. A retrograde planet in transit goes back over a house it has just crossed, so its subjects get a second round of attention. Matters that looked settled return to be corrected or completed. These weeks suit editing and revision.
The classical texts give no rule about phones failing or trips going wrong under a retrograde Mercury. Old contacts tend to reappear in these weeks, and mistakes in documents come to light before they cause real damage. A pending payment or reply often moves at last.
Mercury moves very slowly around each station. The 2 station days, 24 October and 13 November, carry the strongest effect of the whole loop for every sign. Keep both days free of major signatures and difficult conversations.
From 30 October to 10 November, Mercury sits within 12 degrees of the Sun. Astrologers call this combustion. A combust planet still gives the results of its house. Its own voice goes quiet for those days, and the Sun's subjects take that space, such as authority and government offices.
The Planets Around Mercury
Venus: the sign lord and an exchange
Venus rules Libra and is a friend of Mercury. It has been retrograde since 3 October and turns direct on 14 November. On 6 November Venus moves back into Virgo, Mercury's own sign, and Mercury stays behind in Libra for the rest of its loop.
Each planet now sits in the other's sign. This exchange is called Parivartana Yoga, and it ties together the 2 planets of trade and money until 22 November. Saturn aspects Venus in Virgo through these days and adds caution to spending.
The exchange works most clearly from 14 to 22 November, after both planets turn direct. The Venus retrograde 2026 article covers the Venus side of this period.
The Sun: weak and close
From 17 October to 16 November, the Sun is in Libra. Libra is the Sun's weakest sign. During the combust days, decisions from government offices and senior officials tend to shift or arrive later than people expect.
Mars: an aspect until 12 November
Mars is debilitated in Cancer, and its 4th aspect falls on Libra. It aspects Mercury until 12 November. Speech turns sharp in these weeks, and small disputes over money can grow into long arguments at home or at work. Mars moves into Leo on 12 November, 1 day before Mercury turns direct, and the Mars in Cancer article covers that transit.
Vishakha and Swati
Mercury turns retrograde in Vishakha, the nakshatra of Jupiter. On 3 November it moves back into Swati, the nakshatra of Rahu, and it turns direct there on 13 November. Vishakha is about goals and persistence. Swati is about trade and independent work.
Dhanteras, Diwali and Tihar Inside the Retrograde
Every day of the Diwali and Tihar festivals falls inside the retrograde. Most of them also fall inside Mercury's combust days, from 30 October to 10 November.
| Festival | Date |
|---|---|
| Dhanteras | 6 November |
| Kaag Tihar | 7 November |
| Diwali, Lakshmi Puja and Kukur Tihar | 8 November |
| Govardhan Puja | 10 November |
| Bhai Dooj and Bhai Tika | 11 November |
Festival dates come from the panchang. Lakshmi Puja, for example, is fixed by Amavasya and the evening Pradosh period on that day. Mercury's motion has no place in that rule, so worship and family rituals can go ahead exactly as tradition asks.
On Dhanteras, buy the traditional coin, utensil or small piece of gold. Mercury rules bills and paperwork, so check the hallmark and confirm the weight at the counter. Keep the bill safe. Large jewellery orders and vehicle bookings go better after 22 November, when Venus is back in Libra and moving forward.
Many trading families open new account books on Diwali with a Chopda or Bahi-khata puja. Retrograde Mercury suits the closing side. Reconcile the old ledger before the puja, collect pending dues from the year and carry every balance forward with care.
The Muhurat trading session falls on Sunday, 8 November. Keep it symbolic, as the custom intends.
Bhai Dooj and Bhai Tika fall on 11 November, 1 day after Mercury leaves combustion. Family gatherings in that week often bring old topics back to the table.
Common Questions About This Retrograde
Can I buy a phone, laptop or car?
Buy what you need. Check the model number and return policy before you pay. A planned purchase of electronics goes better after 13 November, and a planned vehicle purchase goes better after 22 November. Repairs and servicing suit the retrograde well.
Should I accept a job offer or attend an interview?
Attend the interview. Retrograde periods often bring back former employers and offers that stalled earlier in the year, so an old contact may call again.
Ask for the offer in writing. If the joining date is flexible, choose a day after 13 November, when Mercury is direct and clear of the Sun. Your running dasha decides more about a job than any retrograde does.
Can I sign a contract?
Renewals and revisions suit these weeks. If a new contract cannot wait, keep copies of every page and add a clause that allows a review after 13 November. Avoid signing on the station days, 24 October and 13 November.
Will my ex come back?
Libra is the sign of partnership, and a retrograde Mercury here often brings a message or a call from the past. Whether a reunion lasts depends on your birth chart and your dasha. Talk openly, and decide after 13 November.
Is it safe to marry in this period?
Most wedding muhurtas stay paused until Devutthana Ekadashi on 20 November, the end of Chaturmas. Mercury is direct by then. A date already fixed by your family priest from your own charts can go ahead with the usual pujas and preparations.
Will my exam go badly?
Revision is the strength of a retrograde Mercury, so students who revise steadily do well. Check your admit card and exam centre details twice.
World Events and Markets
In mundane astrology, Mercury rules trade and communication, and it also signifies currency. Libra is the sign of agreements and balance. A retrograde Mercury in Libra points to trade talks and tariff deals announced earlier in October coming back for revision.
The combust days fall with a debilitated Sun. Official figures and policy statements tend to change or arrive late in this stretch, from 30 October to 10 November. Mars aspects Mercury until 12 November, so public statements turn sharp and negotiations can stall over small points.
Agreements tend to move after Mercury turns direct on 13 November. Venus turns direct the next day.
Mercury stays in Swati from 3 to 25 November. Varahamihira calls Mercury's passage through Swati its Prakrita course. In Brihat Samhita 7.9 and 7.14, he links this course with good rain, healthy crops and better public health in the land.
For markets, watch IT, telecom, media, logistics and e-commerce, the classic Mercury sectors. The exchange with Venus from 6 to 22 November brings festival retail and jewellery into the same picture for those 16 days. Sentiment swings most around the station days. Treat these as astrological indications only, and take investment decisions with a qualified adviser.
The last time: October 2013
Mercury made almost the same loop 13 years ago. It turned retrograde on 21 October 2013 at 24°21' Libra in Vishakha and turned direct on 11 November at 8°26' Libra in Swati. Saturn and Rahu were also in Libra that year, so the sign was more crowded.
The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate to 7.75% on 29 October 2013. Iran and 6 world powers held nuclear talks in Geneva from 7 to 10 November and ended without a deal. The talks resumed on 20 November. An interim agreement was signed on 24 November, after Mercury had turned direct.
Think back to October and November 2013. A matter that returned for you then may return in a similar form this year.

Aries (Mesha Rashi)
Mercury moves back through your 7th house of marriage and business partners. Old partners return with new proposals. The terms of a deal agreed in October may need changes. Mercury rules your 3rd and 6th houses, so written contracts and old disputes become part of the same review this autumn.
Mars, your rashi lord, aspects your 7th from Cancer until 12 November, and talks with a spouse or a partner can turn sharp. During the combust days, the other person's pride decides the pace. Put every agreement in writing. Settle it after 13 November.
Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi)
The retrograde falls in your 6th house of daily work and loans, and Mercury rules your 2nd and 5th houses. The 6th suits Mercury in transit. Old workplace problems get solved, and a pending loan or dispute moves towards a settlement you can accept by mid-November.
Venus, your rashi lord, moves into your 5th on 6 November and exchanges signs with Mercury. This exchange ties your daily work to your savings and your creative skills until Venus leaves Virgo on 22 November. Clear an old debt before 13 November.
Gemini (Mithuna Rashi)
Mercury is your rashi lord, so this retrograde touches you directly. It moves back through your 5th house of study and romance, where Mars aspects it from your 2nd until 12 November. An old romance may return.
Students who revise steadily do well now. Keep away from speculative trading until Mercury turns direct, and read every message twice before you send it to anyone important. From 6 to 22 November Venus sits in your 4th in exchange with Mercury, and home matters need more of your time.
Cancer (Karka Rashi)
Mercury retrogrades through your 4th house of home and vehicles. This house suits Mercury. Mars sits in your own sign until 12 November and aspects the 4th, so repairs and renovation work move quickly.
Property papers from September or October come back for a check. A sale or purchase already in progress needs a fresh look at every document, including the old title papers and receipts. Sign the final papers after 13 November. Book a new vehicle after 22 November.
Leo (Simha Rashi)
Mercury rules your 2nd and 11th houses of savings and income, and it retrogrades through your 3rd house of messages and siblings. The Sun, your rashi lord, sits in the same house in its weakest sign. Choose your words with care.
Contracts and sales calls from October return for a second round. A sibling may bring up an old matter. Read every agreement twice, and keep posts on social media short and factual until Mercury turns direct on 13 November.
From 6 November Venus moves into your 2nd house. Family spending needs a fixed budget through Dhanteras and Diwali.
Virgo (Kanya Rashi)
Mercury, your rashi lord and the lord of your 10th, retrogrades through your 2nd house of savings and speech. A pending payment returns. This is a good time to correct your accounts and to settle family discussions about money that were left open earlier.
On 6 November Venus enters your sign. It exchanges signs with Mercury, linking the lords of your 1st, 2nd, 9th and 10th houses, a strong pattern for income. Saturn's aspect on Venus asks for patience, and the results show best after 14 November.
Libra (Tula Rashi)
The retrograde sits in your own sign with the Sun and Venus. Mercury rules your 9th and 12th houses, so matters with teachers and foreign plans come up again through the whole retrograde. Mars aspects your sign until 12 November. Speak slowly.
Your own plans come up for review. Check passports and travel bookings, and keep a regular sleep routine through the festival weeks when late nights are common. From 6 to 22 November Venus, your rashi lord, sits in your 12th, and expenses rise. Launch new personal plans after 13 November, or better still in December.
Scorpio (Vrishchika Rashi)
Expenses and foreign places come under review, since the retrograde runs through your 12th house and Mercury rules your 8th and 11th. Bookings and visa files need a second check, because errors in paperwork tend to show up first in this house. Read every form twice.
Mars, your rashi lord, aspects this house from Cancer until 12 November. Avoid lending money in these weeks. From 6 November Venus sits in your 11th, and income from an older source tends to return before the end of the year.
Sagittarius (Dhanu Rashi)
Your 11th house of income and friends hosts this retrograde. The 11th suits every planet in transit. Old clients and former colleagues come back with work, and a network you had neglected starts to bring in business again.
Mercury rules your 7th and 10th, so partners and career both gain from these contacts. From 6 to 22 November Venus sits in your 10th in exchange with Mercury, and Saturn aspects it from your 4th. Reconnect with a former employer.
Capricorn (Makara Rashi)
Mercury, lord of your 6th and 9th houses, retrogrades through your 10th house of career. An older job offer may return. Mars aspects your 10th from your 7th until 12 November, and friction with a colleague can rise in that stretch.
During the combust days, your manager sets the pace. Keep seniors informed of every change in your work. From 6 to 22 November Venus, your yogakaraka, sits in your 9th and exchanges signs with Mercury in your 10th. The classics value a link between the 9th and 10th lords, and it supports career steps taken after 14 November.
Aquarius (Kumbha Rashi)
Your 9th house of teachers and higher study carries the retrograde, and Mercury rules your 5th and 8th houses. Postponed study plans and pilgrimages come back, along with long trips abroad that you had put aside earlier in the year. An old disagreement with a senior may also return.
Keep travel dates flexible. From 6 November Venus, your yogakaraka, moves into your 8th, and Saturn, your rashi lord, aspects it from your 2nd. Keep every shared account and insurance paper in order through November, since Saturn is still moving through your Sade Sati.
Pisces (Meena Rashi)
Joint money and insurance come up for review, as the retrograde runs through your 8th house and Mercury rules your 4th and 7th. Mercury does well in the 8th in transit. An old insurance claim, refund or inheritance matter can move in your favour before Mercury leaves Libra on 2 December.
Mars aspects this house from your 5th until 12 November. Stay calm in money talks with in-laws. From 6 to 22 November Venus sits in your 7th and aspects Saturn in your sign. You are in the peak phase of Sade Sati, so relationship talks in that fortnight need extra patience and plain speech.
Remedies and Observances
Wednesday is Mercury's day. Chant Om Bum Budhaya Namah 108 times on Wednesday mornings, or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama once a week. Offer durva grass to Ganesha on Wednesdays as well, since Ganesha worship is one of the traditional remedies for Mercury.
Give green moong dal or green cloth at a temple on a Wednesday. Feeding cows green fodder is another Mercury dana. Help a student with books or fees during these weeks, since Mercury is the natural karaka of learning and education.
The most useful remedy is practical. Finish one pending task each day, return the calls you have delayed, and keep a written note of every agreement.
Wear an emerald only after a full chart check, and start it after Mercury turns direct. For a reading of this retrograde against your own chart and dasha, book a consultation.
After 13 November
Mercury turns direct at 10°48' Libra and moves forward over the same degrees. It re-enters Vishakha on 25 November and crosses its station point of 26°45' before it leaves Libra on 2 December. Late-October matters usually settle then.
Mercury enters Scorpio on 2 December and turns combust again from 7 December. The next retrograde begins on 7 October 2027. It starts at 10°41' Libra and ends at 25°04' Virgo on 28 October, so Libra hosts the start of the autumn retrograde next year. The Mercury transit 2026 page lists every sign change and station for the year.
