Mars Transit in Magha

The Pitris, the ancestors, preside over Magha. Its lord is Ketu and its symbol a throne. It lies in Leo, the Sun's sign, and the Sun is a friend of Mars, and Ketu acts as Mars does, so the graha finds a kindred lord and a friendly sign. This is one of the stronger nakshatra positions for Mars.

The stay is about a month, longer than in most nakshatras. Authority, lineage, inheritance and the duties owed to the family line are the themes, and Mars gives the courage to claim a position along with a temper that can cost it. Promotions, property from the father's side and ceremonies for the ancestors all come forward.

The heart, spine and eyes are Leo's body areas. Pride is the moral hazard. Ketu in Magha gives sudden reversals, and Mars makes them dramatic.

• Gemini, Pisces and Libra Moons and lagnas have Mars in the third, sixth and eleventh, Phaladeepika's favourable houses, and rise through effort.
• Leo Moons carry Mars on the self, with confidence high and patience low.
• Taurus, Aquarius and Capricorn Moons meet Mars in the fourth, seventh and eighth, and should take care with home, partner and body.

A person's way with authority is exposed. Magha asks whether power is held as a trust from those who came before or as a personal possession, and Mars answers quickly.

Perform tarpana for the ancestors, and worship Hanuman on Tuesday. Recite Om Angarakaya Namah and give red lentils or copper, the dana Parashara names for Mars. Serve your elders in person this month.
