What Mars in Mula nakshatra means

Mula is Ketu's nakshatra, with Nirriti as its deity and a bundle of roots as its symbol. It lies at the start of Sagittarius, Jupiter's sign. Ketu acts as Mars does, and Jupiter is Mars's friend, so the graha has a kindred lord and a welcoming sign. The first degrees are gandanta, the junction of water and fire, and the opening days are tense.

Mars stays about two and a half weeks. Mula pulls things up by the root, and Nirriti is the goddess of dissolution. The themes are investigation, the end of what is finished, medicine from roots, and losses that clear the ground. Old disputes are traced to their origin, contracts are torn up, and a person may leave a post for good.

The hips, thighs and sciatic nerve are the body areas of Sagittarius. Falls, injuries in travel and quarrels with a teacher are the classical warnings.

The person's relation to loss is seen here plainly. Mula asks whether one can let a thing die when its time has come, and Mars decides the matter quickly. The person who watches the impulse to destroy learns which endings are true and which are only anger.

Nirriti is honoured with a dana to those who have lost everything. Worship Hanuman on Tuesday, recite Om Angarakaya Namah, and give red lentils or copper, the dana of Mars. Let the first few days pass before any decision that cannot be undone.

Libra, Cancer and Aquarius Moons and lagnas have Mars in the third, sixth and eleventh, the houses Phaladeepika names as favourable. They finish what needed finishing and gain from it. Sagittarius Moons carry the graha on the self and feel the pull to uproot everything at once. Virgo, Gemini and Taurus Moons, with Mars in the fourth, seventh and eighth, should not end a home, a marriage or a treatment hastily.
