Cancer belongs to the Moon, and the Sun counts the Moon a friend, so Surya is comfortable here for the month it stays. Karka Sankranti opens Dakshinayana, the Sun's southern course, which the texts treat as the night of the devas.
Cancer governs the chest, the mother, the home and emotional memory. The Sun lights the household and the person's standing inside it. Old family matters surface during the stay and ask to be settled. Authority at home is tested more than authority outside it.
The nakshatras are Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha. Punarvasu, under Jupiter, opens the stay with return and repair.
