What Sun in Capricorn means
Capricorn belongs to Saturn, whom the Sun counts an enemy. The texts name Saturn the son of Surya, and the coldness between them is old. Makar Sankranti opens the month, and with it Uttarayana, the Sun's northern course.
Nepal keeps this ingress as Maghe Sankranti and India as Makar Sankranti. Both mark it with sesame and jaggery.
Capricorn governs the knees, career, duty and structure. The Sun lights the work a person has taken on and the price of it. Recognition comes slowly here and lasts longer for that.
The nakshatras are Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta. Uttara Ashadha belongs to the Sun, so the stay opens with strength. Shravana, under the Moon, favours listening, learning and the spoken teaching. Dhanishta, under Mars, closes the stay with drive and public work.
Phaladeepika places the Sun well in the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh from the Moon. Scorpio, Leo, Aries and Pisces Moons receive it in those houses. Cancer Moons carry it in the seventh. Capricorn Moons hold it in the first, where the knees and the energy both suffer.
The month shows a person the difference between duty and ambition. Work carried out of fear tires the body far faster than work carried out of dharma. Uttarayana is used for practice a person means to keep. Begin what should continue past the month.
- Offer arghya at sunrise from Makar Sankranti onward without a gap.
- Give sesame, jaggery and warm cloth, as the season's custom asks.
- Serve an elder or a worker who is given little notice.
